How does your solar installation work with the PG&E grid?

Seamlessly.

A grid-tied solar energy system is connected to the power grid. When your solar panels are collecting solar energy you are feeding energy into the power grid, and your meter is moving backwards. When you use energy during the night you are “buying back” energy from PG&E. 

A quick look at your meter will tell you how you are doing on a day-to-day basis, and will empower you to become more energy-efficient.

At the end of the month the meter is read: if you are where you started you pay nothing. If you are below your energy credit is carried forward to the next month. If you are above you pay PG&E for the additional usage. In almost all instances you are assured to pay at the lowest base rate.

PG&E will pay you for excess energy you deliver to the grid beyond what you use. A bill before the California Assembly (California Assembly Bill 1920—The Huffman Bill) has been passed, therefore you can be a net power supplier, and actually make money on your solar energy system.
